A Promise Fulfilled
By Natalia Fomin

Today most Jewish people cannot trace their ancestry and know for sure what tribe they came from except those Jews who came from the house of Levi. Even though the Jewish people are scattered throughout the face of the earth, no matter where they live, only Jews from the tribe of Levi know their lineage.

Natalia Fomin

But it should not surprise us, because God is faithful to His Word, and He is able to keep His promise that He made to the tribe of Levi--that they will continue to be recognizable.
In Jeremiah 33:18 we read: “And the Levitical priests shall never lack a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to prepare sacrifices continually.”

This promise is further secured by an oath when God declared in verses 20-23, “Thus says the LORD, ‘If you can break My covenant for the day and My covenant for the night, so that day and night will not be at their appointed time, then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant so that he will not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests, My ministers.  As the host of heaven cannot be counted and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me.’”

One might ask the question, “Well, since there is no longer a temple for priests and Yeshua is our High priest according to the order of Melchizedek, why would God make such a promise that seems to be almost irrelevant.”

One practical answer could be that our God is the God who always rewards our exploits of faith. God loves to reward those who revere His Holy Name and honor His character. The root of this promise to the tribe of Levi is found in Numbers 25:10-13 where God makes a covenant of peace to the Levites because they were zealous for His Holiness and avenged His name in the midst of evil. God promises: “Behold, I give him My covenant of peace; and it shall be for him and his descendants after him, a covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel” (Numbers 25:12-13). One day, in the Millennium Kingdom, the Levites will be fully restored to the God of Israel and once again will minister to the Lord.

David’s Testimony

But even today we at Hope of Israel Congregation are privileged to have David Taylor, a Levite as our worship leader. Every Shabbat and Jewish Holidays David ministers in our congregation through liturgy and worship and concludes every service with the Aaronic Benediction. Although David’s last name is Taylor, his family name is originally Hochman that was changed due to anti-Semitism.

David Taylor

David’s father was raised an Orthodox Jew in Brooklyn, NY. As a professional musician, David’s father played for many years with Guy Lombardo, and on the Ted Mack show. David was raised in a traditional Jewish home and attended synagogue weekly. At a young age, he was moved by the prayers during the synagogue services and often felt a deep closeness to God. He desired to one day become a rabbi. He excelled in learning and chanting the Hebrew prayers and after his Bar Mitzvah at the age of 13 the rabbi hired David to teach the beginner’s Hebrew School class at his synagogue. Every Shabbat, he sat on the bema with his rabbi and the president of the synagogue and assisted with the weekly Torah ceremonies and Torah readings. He continued to be very involved in his synagogue until he turned 16. Then his interest shifted from his synagogue to playing guitar and hanging out with his friends. At 18 years of age David as a gifted musician was earning a living as a guitar player. It was then that he decided to become a musician/entertainer. Eventually David’s interest for both Judaism and the God of Israel was replaced by an interest in Eastern religions and philosophy.

But one day when he was challenged to read Psalm 2 his eyes were opened and he turned back to God and put his trust in the Messiah of Israel. Now David loves to sit at the feet of the greatest rabbi, Yeshua (Jesus) and learn from Him. David is fulfilling his calling as a Levite as he leads the congregation to worship the Lord.

'Avodah' Means Worship
David has written a number of songs that serve as a blessing and encouragement to many. God’s promise to continually have Levites that minister to Him is realized in David’s life (Jeremiah 33:22). His newly released CD, is entitled Avodah, which means worship in Hebrew.

It is a collection of original Messianic worship songs written and performed by him. The songs include Messianic as well as more contemporary worship songs, which were written with individuals and Messianic congregational worship in mind. From the uplifting Ani Ma’amin to the upbeat Lo Lanu HaShem, you’ll find Avodah brings Scripture alive in a way that is exciting, worshipful and edifying! For David this CD is a marvelous work of God. He and his wife, Laurie have been blessed with two wonderful children, Julie and Daniel, who have become Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and are also Jewish believers in Messiah with a strong sense of Jewish identity. His love for Yeshua, and for his heritage as a Jew, is passionate.

You are invited to come and visit our congregation to worship with us any Shabbat or for the special Jewish holidays. We will have our Purim play on March 2nd at 7:30pm.
